Hire Box of Rain if you want quality, value, trustworthy service.
I've hired virtually every type of home service professional in improving my 1940s Seattle home. I've had good people to work with in all arenas, but Mary Kay and Niko at Box of Rain are #1 at the top of my list. Frankly, I can't help recommending them even when I selfishly want to keep them to myself.
Here's why:
- They're just plain talented in garden design.
- Because they also do maintenance, they are practical. They avoid planting things that will not stand the test of time. Specifically, they have helped me grow things that will survive in brutal clay soil, where nothing previously survived.
- They hold dear your budget and scope. Over 10 years, and 30+ new or maintenance projects, they have never surprised me with an over-budget expense. I have never had that experience, consistently, with any other contractor. Ever.
- If there's a project they aren't expert in, they have recommended great new reliable partners
For anyone who wants to transform their landscape, but doesn't want to bite off too much at one time, this team gets it. They'll work with you. I only wish I'd hired them 5 years earlier than I did. I wasted a lot of time fruitlessly trying to weed/maintain a couple of major yard areas.

My garden has been enjoying monthly visits from Box of Rain since 2003 and boy does it show!
Mary Kay and Niko have provided expert maintenance to this nearly quarter-acre densely planted city garden for six years, as well as doing a number of installations to enhance what came before them. They have replaced a slimy brick walkway with beautiful stone paving, created a peaceful leafy reading haven from a drab unused corner, and this year they built a mini-deck on which I am raising veggies in troughs and other containers. Additionally, they installed an irrigation system that lets me leave town with no worries. Pots scattered around the garden are crowded with colorful treasures that are delightful all season.
While providing excellent attention and horticultural knowledge to my garden, Box of Rain is flexible and responsive to my budget. As someone on a limited income now, their estimates for time and materials are accurate and if there are questions, Mary Kay and Niko always check with me prior to getting started..
I recommend the services of Box of Rain with the highest enthusiasm.

We hired Box of Rain for semi annual clean up of our yard. Along with this they also helped choose, select and plant new plants that we needed as our young Lab at the time, Libby, had done some fair destruction and damage on earlier and existing plant life :). Mary Kay and Nikko were a pleasure to work with. They were on time, friendly, worked incredibly hard and efficiently and were just a real delight and pleasure to employ. They were thorough, within their estimated budget and chose some excellent plants that grew well and thrived, even with our dog. I would recommend them for consultation and landscaping. When we first hired them they were doing regular maintenance and yard clean up and were branching out into desiring to plan and execute larger landscaping projects.
